Chillers Simplify the Lab

Introduction

Researchers have access to more sophisticated equipment than ever before. As labs work to become more automated to increase work flow, single-use systems are becoming more antiquated. Modern laboratory equipment offers more capabilities in smaller housings for researcher, as a single machine is now able to complete many different tasks. This is not only to cut down the cost of purchasing multiple pieces of equipment, but also to save precious lab bench space. One enabling factor of lab equipment miniaturization is the reduction in size of essential cooling systems.

Bath Cooling

Laboratory cooling baths are used to maintain below ambient temperatures of liquid mixtures, for example when collecting liquids after distillation or conducting chemical reactions with substances that require refrigeration or freezing. A cooling bath typically consists of a substance with high thermal conductivity mixed with either a solid material that melts at low temperatures or liquid with a low boiling point. While an ice/water mixture is the simplest and easiest type of cooling bath, dry ice or nitrogen are required for cooling below zero Celsius.

Electron Microscopes

Unlike traditional light microscopes that use light rays, electron microscopes use an electron beam. The main advantage is the higher image resolution, enabling a magnification of up to 2 million times, whereas light microscopes only have magnification up to 1000-2000 times. As the high voltage electron beam passes through several key components in the electron microscope, active cooling is required to ensure proper operation. Thermal fluctuations can deteriorate image quality and have a negative impact on samples during examination.

Precise Temperature Control for Microscopes

Introduction

Electron microscopes are a powerful laboratory tool used to observe samples across many scientific disciplines. These advanced analytical instruments enable researchers to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze samples in fields like metallography, metrology, anthropology, zoology, epidemiology and more. Temperature control plays a dynamic role in ensuring the proper operation of electron microscopes.
