PowerCycling PCX Series

Next-Generation Thermoelectrics Designed for Real-Time PCR

Real-Time PCR requires a high number thermal cycles to replicate DNA. PCR Thermocyclers utilize thermoelectric coolers to precisly manage set point temperatures and ramp rates. Mechanical stresses that occur during heating and cooling cycles quickly degrades standard thermoelectric coolers.

PowerCycling PCX Series Test Protocol

The PowerCycling PCX Series thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is a high-performance thermoelectric cooler that uses an enhanced module construction to provide long life operation in thermal cycling applications. It is ideal for molecular diagnostics where fast temperature ramp rates are required while maintaining precise temperature with minimal gradient.

Point of Care Testing

Point of care testing allows medical staff to perform real-time testing in the doctor’s office or at home. This contrasts with traditional medical laboratory testing that needs to be shipped out to a central testing center and take days to get results. Bringing testing and diagnosing closer to the patient is all an effort to improve healthcare.

Temperature stability within the point of care testing device is the key to achieve reliable results. Because conductivity varies when blood temperature changes, blood sample’s temperature must be accurately controlled.

Introductions

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a technique used in molecular diagnostics to amplify sequencing of DNA. Also referred to as molecular photocopying, the DNA produced by PCR is vital to many laboratory and clinical procedures. PCR testing has been instrumental in the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2, better known as COVID-19. Not only do PCR tests detect the presence of a virus during testing but it will also detect fragments of a virus even after the patient is no longer infected.

DNA Amplification

PCR is enabled by a machine called a thermocycler, which rapidly heats and cools the DNA sample to a defined series of temperature steps.

Modern thermocyclers used for real-time and digital PCR testing utilize Peltier technology to precisely manage the set point temperatures and ramp rates. This is a harsh environment for standard thermoelectric coolers due to the mechanical stresses that occur during the heating and cooling stage.
